The exemplary lifestyle of former late President John Evans Atta Mills is under the spotlight once again.
According to Samuel Atta Mills, his brother was more fixated on making life easier for the ordinary Ghanaian than living the ‘pompous’ life of a president.
He cited an instance when the roof of the President at his official residence- the Osu Castle was leaking but he still insisted on compromising instead of moving to a private facility and enjoying his reign.
“Whenever it rained, we had to put about 8 buckets in his bedroom. All the fixes were rusted because it was so close to the ocean and maintenance over there was difficult,” he said on JoyNews.
At the time, the Jubilee House was not completed yet. For this reason, many suggested that Prof Atta Mill moves into his private home at Spintex Road in Accra to make his life easier.
Samuel however told journalist Raymond Aquah of JoyNews that Prof Mills did not want his daily activities as a President including the convoys among others to become a nuisance to his already-bustling community.
“He was like no… can you believe every morning a President with his sirens and everything pushing everybody aside just to come to work? And then he will do that in the evening when everybody was going?” he explained adding that Prof Mills was not ready to make life uncomfortable for these neighbours.
Former President Atta Mills remained at the Osu Castle until his demise. He died on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, after serving for nearly four years as President of Ghana.
