The Minority in Parliament has noted with grave concern, some steep and astronomical increases in service and other related charges within the Electricity sector averaging at almost 100%. And has cautioned PURC to suspend these hikes in prices and resort to due process with immediate effect.
According to the minority spokes person on the mines and energy committee what is more worrying is the fact that the increments have been carried out in the most opaque and clandestine manner without recourse to any public announcement by the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission.
He elaborated that, the Minority wishes to state in unequivocal terms that they completely reject the draconian price hikes given the current economic conditions as well as the surreptitious manner with which the exercise has been carried out. He described the increment in prices as unorthodox approach which is in complete violation of laid down processes which require that consumers are notified of such adjustments prior to implementation.
John Abdulai Jinapor speaking on the matter stressed that if PURC refuses to suspend the hikes in prices the members of the minority in the mines and energy committee shall use whatever parliamentary and legitimate processes to ensure that the PURC is called before parliament.
