Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Alhaji Haruna Iddrisu in a statement on the floor of parliament on Tuesday February 15 about alleged police brutality in Lamashegu last weekend says the youth in Tamale are angry over rampant attacks on them by the Ghana Police Service.
Minority Leader further stated that, the Ghana Police Service “are quick in using excessive force” in maintaining law & order, if not checked couldn’t have led to civil unrest.
He is therefore calling for a full-scale investigation recognising a Ghana Police Service inquiry into the actions of its personnel which resulted in one fatality and injuring others after live rounds were fired upon pursuit of a resident of Lamashegu.
Hon. Iddrisu has also called on residents of Tamale to remain calm as investigations are ongoing despite their anger at the ‘unprofessional’ conduct of police personnel and the blatant disrespect of the paramount chief of Lamashegu.
In contribution to the statement by the Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu, the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin also supported the call for an inquiry into the incident without submitting same in a partisan lense.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin further pleaded with the IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare for an inquiry and report for a way forward and urged police officers around the country to not to be so quick to pull their trigger.
