Jorginho converted from the spot while forward Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang doubled the lead before halftime to help the Blues do the double on the Serie A side.
Elsewhere in Croatia FC Salzburg battled Dinamo Zagreb to salvage a vital point away from home. Nicolas Seiwald shot the visitors in the lead in 12th minutes while Ljubicic drew level before halftime. The game ended in a 1-1 stalemate as the second half failed to produce any goal.
GROUP F
Shakhtar Donetsk nearly shocked holders Real Madrid but for defender Antonio Rüdiger’s last gasp equalizer that shocked Warsaw.
Madrid were sluggish in most part of the game allowing Donetsk to pummel the hell out of them and took a deserving lead just after the restart.
Donetsk held onto the lead until additional time where Rüdiger put his life on the line to bring Los Blancos back on level terms with a thumping header — the German collided with the keepers the process, sustaining a nasty head injury but it was all worth it as Madrid are through to the knockout stages.
RB Leipzig strolled past Celtic with a 2-0 victory at the Celtic Park in Glasgow to go second in the group.
Timo Werner and Emil Forsberg got the job done for the Bundesliga side.
GROUP G
FC Copenhagen sensationally held Manchester to a goalless draw in Denmark. Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty while Sergio Gomez got sent off for a professional foul in an all-round eventful game.
Erling Haaland was an unused substitute as City’s six game winning run came to a halt but they are still leading the group and are in pole position to qualify to the next stage.
Borussia Dortmund battled back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw at home.
Tanguy Nianzou opened the scoring in 18 minutes for the visitors but Jude Bellingham leveled midway through the second half to earn a vital point for the Black and Yellows.
GFOUP H
Maccabi Haifa stunned Juventus with a 2-0 victory leaving the Seria A side on the brink of elimination.
Ahead of the Bianconeri trailed PSG and Benfica by four points and needed a win to the stand the chance of progressing to the next stage.
But the Israeli champions outplayed Juve at the Sammy Ofer Stadium. Omer Atzili first-half double was the difference but the margin of victory have been greater for Maccabi.
At the Pac des Princess Kylian Mbappe became Paris Saint-Germain’s leading scorer in the Champions League but they were held to a 1-1 draw against Benfica.
The Frenchman converted from the spot to give PSG the lead but the Portuguese side also won a penalty and Joao Mario stepped up and tucked home the equalizer.
