Spurs boss Antonio Conte is no stranger to San Siro, having been in the Inter dugout for two seasons as well as a visiting coach for the likes of Atalanta and Juventus. His current team also have fond memories of a 1-0 away win there in the first leg of their 2010/11 round of 16 tie – Peter Crouch applying the finishing touch to a late counterattack. It is little surprise that in-form Harry Kane looks likeliest to provide any such similar moments this time around.

Expert prediction

Vieri Capretta, match reporter
It’s a very different Milan side to the one that won the league last May and started the season on top form. The victory over Torino on Friday was a relief after five defeats in the previous seven games. However, we all know that Europe is the Rossoneri’s favourite stage so we can expect a great performance in front of a roaring San Siro.

The question is which Tottenham will turn up: the side that won at Manchester City the weekend before last or the one soundly beaten by Leicester on Saturday? Conte’s charges have won five and lost four of their past nine outings.

What the coaches say

Stefano Pioli, Milan coach: “You cannot expect to find easy rivals in the last 16, but we will do our best to prepare: they will be exciting rivals. Tottenham are very compact and organised with really strong individuals and with many [players] who know Milan and Italian soccer. In theory, I think it could be an even clash.”

Antonio Conte, Tottenham coach: “We lack consistency this season. It’s difficult to remain focused for every game. Playing under pressure all the time is good for some players and not for others. We’re working on it. We want to make our players more resilient, but there are factors beyond our control like injuries to important players.”
