Ursula Owusu under pressure to extend the deadline for SIM card re-registration

The deadline for all mobile users to link their Ghana Cards to their SIMs and complete the re-registration process is quickly approaching, yet only 14,102,670 of the 41,685,575 mobile subscribers have actually done so.

The Ministry of Communications and Digitalization has already warned that it will not extend the deadline when it ends on July 31, 2022, for reregistering SIM cards across the country.

The exercise was given further time after initially ending on March 31, 2022.

According to Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who provided this week’s Mid-Year Budget review, less than half of the target has been captured since the National SIM Card Re-registration procedure began on October 1, 2021.

“I, therefore, tell you to do so before the 31st of July,” she said.

The Ghana Card, the only form of identity required for the reregistration procedure, is not readily available to many Ghanaians, who are putting pressure on the Communications Minister to extend the deadline.

According to well-known campaigner Sam Nartey George, who made the announcement via Facebook, an extension is required since the National Identification Authority is unable to provide residents with the Ghana Card.
