#UselessBwumia, #HopelessMahama; puppet NPP, NDC foot-soldiers ‘fight’ on X

Ken Ofori-Atta

In the aftermath of the 2024 budget reading by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, a disturbing trend emerged on social media platforms, with foot-soldiers of rival political parties engaging in a war of words, resorting to derogatory hashtags and personal attacks.

Yesterday, following the budget reading, supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took to micro-blogging platform X to launch a scathing attack on the Flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The hashtag #UselessBawumia was attached to posts highlighting perceived failed promises by the current government, with various foul words used to denigrate the Vice President.

Not to be outdone, today, coinciding with the final funeral rites of the late former First Lady Mrs. Theresa Kufuor, NPP foot-soldiers retaliated with the hashtag #HopelessMahama, directed at the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama. This tit-for-tat approach to political discourse raises serious concerns about the precedent being set for future generations.

The use of such divisive hashtags and personal attacks is seen by many as counterproductive to healthy political discourse. Instead of focusing on policies and constructive criticism, this style of politicking only serves to deepen existing divisions and create a toxic political environment.

Prominent voices in the political arena have expressed their concern over the negative turn that political discourse has taken. They emphasize the importance of engaging in respectful and constructive dialogue that centers around policy discussions, avoiding personal attacks that contribute to the erosion of civility in public discourse.

As citizens and political leaders navigate the complex landscape of governance, it is crucial to foster an environment that encourages open conversations and the exchange of diverse ideas. The current trend of resorting to insults and name-calling risks overshadowing the pressing issues facing the nation and impedes progress toward common goals for the betterment of the country. It remains to be seen whether this negative trend will continue or if there will be a shift towards a more constructive and respectful political dialogue in the future.
