The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North Constituency, Hon. Sheila Bartels has indicated her support for a proposal made for the New Patriotic Party (N.P.P) to organise an early congress for selecting the next flagbearer of the party.
Speaking to a journalist on the sidelines of the ongoing NPP Annual National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, the MP said the party needs a bit of time to project its next candidate, especially in the face of the fact that the main opposition party began campaigning immediately after they lost the 2020 election. She also said that she was open to the idea of having an expansion of the members of the Electoral College to ensure that more of the grassroots have a say in who leads the party into the next election.
The proposal highlighted by the MP, if considered and approved by the delegates would have the next flagbearer of the party elected two clear years before the next major election. Currently, the party elects a candidate, two years before elections when in opposition and a year when in power.
The New Patriotic Party through its constituency, regional, and national delegates shall consider this proposal among 37 others which could see an amendment to the party constitution.
