Vinicius and Rodrygo meant Madrid missed out on Haaland

Real Madrid were very interested in signing Erling Haaland in the summer 2017. The Norwegian striker, who was than at Molde, was ruled out at the time, as Los Blancos’ priority was getting Vinicius and Rodrygo.

In Manchester City’s visit to Real Madrid for the first leg of the Champions League semi-final tonight, Erling Haaland will go up against the ‘Merengues’ for the first time in his career.

Interestingly, in 2017, Chamartin could have been the Norwegian’s home. However, according to ‘Marca’, the prolific striker was snubbed at the time by Los Blancos’ priority of getting Vinicius and Rodrygo.

Back then, Madrid had already signed Vini, while his compatriot was next on their list. The Bernabeu were impressed by Haaland’s performances with the Norway U20 side, the side he scored nine goals in one game for against Honduras.

After signing Martin Odegaard two years prior, the Spanish giants looked at the possibility of signing a new nordic player. However, the number 9 went off to Austria before settling down in Germany.

From then on, Haaland’s future has never been close to Real Madrid. The board’s target has always been PSG man Kylian Mbappe.
