We’ll extend protest to another region if Akufo-Addo does not respond to petition – Ablakwa

Lead convener of ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demonstration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has said the ongoing protest will be extended to other Regions if President Akufo-Addo does not respond to their petition.

The Legislator in an interview with TV3 during the on-going demonstration noted that President Akufo-Addo must take action to prevent the sale of SNNIT hotels.

According to him, the protest will continue to the Central Region which houses some major state hotels if no positive response is received from President Akufo-Addo.

“The demonstrations may continue if we don’t hear from President Akufo-Addo in the next few hours after the demonstration saying that they are backing off this transaction then we will have to continue.

“We may go to the Central Region where very iconic hotels like Ridge Royal and Elmina Resort are and then remember that Busia Lodge and Trust Lodge are under attack,” he stated.

The protest kick started in Accra today, June 18 to press on government to halt the sale of 60 percent shares in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a company owned by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Ablakwa’s demands

Immediate halt of the sale of SSNIT hotels. Profitable state assets should not be sold.

Government should not sell workers’ properties without permission and consent of workers.

It is inappropriate for Ministers to buy state assets.

State assets should not be sold to Bryan Acheampong and all politically exposed persons.

There should not be deliberate run down of state assets for politicians to benefit from them.
