We’ll replicate Kumawu win in Assin North – Stephen Ntim

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is optimistic of snatching the Assin North seat from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Stephen Ntim who is the National Chairman of the NPP, disclosed that the massive victory in Kumawu in the Ashanti Region will be replicated at the close of polls today Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

“We are going to win this election like we did in Kumawu. We have worked hard, our government has worked hard and tomorrow, we are going to carry the day”, he said at a press briefing at Assin Breku after meeting with the police command.

“Our government and the President have delivered”, he argued.

Over 40,000 voters are expected to cast their ballots in 99 polling stations in the area with both the NPP and NDC laying claim to the seat.

The NDC has argued that using the courts to oust Mr. James Gyakye Quayson is injustice and urging residents to vote for him in protest.

The NPP on the other hand accuses the NDC candidate of not fit to be a representative of the people of the area and has nothing to show for the few years he spent in parliament.

Mr Quayson’s parliamentary membership was revoked after the Supreme Court invalidated his election in the 2020 polls because, according to the Court, he owed allegiance to another country, Canada.

His legal challenges began when a group petitioned the Electoral Commission in the Central Region to disqualify Mr Quayson, claiming that he owed allegiance to Canada.

The Supreme Court however in a unanimous decision ruled that Mr. Quayson was not qualified at the time of filing his nomination forms.

It further held that the EC allowing him to contest when he had not shown evidence of renunciation of his citizenship of Canada is unconstitutional.
