Western Region: 10 persons arrested over violent clash between galamsey groups

Police in the Western Region have arrested ten persons following a violent clash between two illegal small-scale mining groups at Bososa near Tarkwa in the Western Region that led to the death of one person.

The suspects have already been put before court and remanded into police custody.

They have been provisionally charged with murder, causing unlawful harm, and possession of offensive weapon.

Two people have been treated at the Tarkwa hospital and have been arrested by the police, bringing the total persons in custody to 12 to assist with investigations.

The Public Relations Officer of the Western Regional Police Command, DSP Olivia Adiku, in an interview with Citi News said two of four persons who were hospitalized have been discharged and arrested while the two others are still receiving medical attention for their critical conditions at the Tarkwa Government Hospital.

She said, “So far, ten people have been arrested. They were arraigned yesterday [Thursday] and they have been remanded to custody to reappear on 6th April 2022. Two others, one Awal Mohammed whose injury is severe has been sent to Effia Nkwanta Hospital, and Alhassan Isaka is still on admission at the Takoradi Government hospital.”

DSP Adiku added that the police are yet to get the details about the cause of the violence and will be looking to extract that information from the suspects to enable them complete their investigations.

“We need to have them to be able to get to the bottom of the issue. For now, we don’t have the details on what led to the fight, but thorough investigation, we will be able to establish what was the problem,” she said.
