Vice President Bawumia commissioned the 100km Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure of Kumasi Inner Ring Road and Adjacent Streets Project – Phase 1 on December 13, 2019 at Kentenkrono in the Oforikrom Municipality.
Since 2017, the Akufo-Addo government has built 1,180.2 km of roads. This is more than twice the 503 km of road built in the area from 2009 to 2016.
The 100km Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure of Kumasi Inner Ring Road and Adjacent Streets Project – Phase 1 aims to improve intra-urban traffic flow and reduce flooding, dust pollution, and other environmental effects of a poor road network, according to the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
The Urban Roads Department said the project has enhanced access in Kumasi, notably for Asokwa, Bantama, Nhyiaeso, Manhyia, Oforikrom, Kwadaso, Tafo Pankrono, Subin, and Suame.
Vice President Bawumia said the project, along with others completed and continuing, shows the government’s commitment to upgrading road infrastructure in Ghana, particularly in the Ashanti area.
“This project is significant to the government since it would add 100km of restored roads to Kumasi.
“Apart from the roads we’re launching today, let me list some of the works the government is doing in Ashanti under the Ministry of Roads and Highways:
The Department of Urban Roads (DUR) has asphalted 295km of Ashanti roads since 2017. Beneficiary areas include Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly-Subin Nhyiaeso and Bantama, Asokwa, Oforikrom, Old Tafo, Asokore Mampong, Bekwai, Ejisu, Juaben, Sekyere East (Effiduase), Asante Mampong, Kwadaso, Obuasi, Suame, and Atwima Nwabiagya South.
“In addition to the 100km local roads we are commissioning today, the DUR has built another 75km of town roads in Ashanti, including Bekwai Town roads (11km), Kwamo Town Roads (5.5km), Manhyia Roads (Buokrom)- 6km and Ejisu/ Kwaso Town Road (7km),” Dr. Bawumia said.
Under the supervision of the DUR, ongoing projects include the Partial Reconstruction of Selected Roads in Kumasi Lot1 (57km), the Kumasi Roads and Drainage Extension Project (90% complete), and the 100km construction of the Kumasi Inner City Roads, which includes the rehabilitation of 100km of local roads in Kumasi. The project was 10% complete when it began on March 25, 2022.
Since 2017, the GHA has rehabilitated and upgraded 264 kilometres of roads, using primer seal or complete seal. In the area, 28km of essential roads are in the asphaltic binder.
Department of Feeder Roads has constructed 342km of roads since 2017. Poano-Ntinnanko Feeder Road (6km), Barekese-Fufuo-Adugyama Feeder Road (10km), Ahenkro-Boamag Feeder Road (11km), Menang Junction-Menang-Dotom Feeder Road (15km), and Fiankoma-Hia Feeder Road were all tarred (14.5km).
Assuring the area of the government’s commitment to upgrading road infrastructure, Vice President Bawumia said:
“There is currently a lot of roads works at various stages of completion in the region and we intend to ensure that they are all completed. I am happy to inform you that Parliament has approved the construction of the Suame Interchange- Phase1. Works are expected to start by September 2022.
I know you are also eager to hear about the Boankra Inland Port. I am happy to report that the contractor has moved to the site for work to begin this month,” he added.
The NPP government declared this year, 2022 as a year of roads.
