2025 Atweaman Odwira festival: Chief calls on government to prioritize support for agriculture to reduce importation of foodstuffs.

Obrempon Sintim Poku III, the Head of the Benkum Division of the Atweaman in the Eastern Region, has called on the government to prioritize support for agriculture in the country.

He emphasized the importance of reducing Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported foodstuffs such as onions, chicken, and rice.

Speaking at the Atweaman Odwira Festival Durbar held in Akim Manso with the theme “Uniting in tradition, stronger in progress”, he highlighted that despite Ghana’s abundant fertile land, the nation still depends significantly on imports, which he described as both economically and socially detrimental.

Obrempon Sintim Poku III pointed out that locally producing these food items would not only stimulate Ghana’s agricultural sector but also create job opportunities and reduce health risks sometimes associated with imported products.

He expressed concern about the possibility of diseases being introduced through imported foodstuffs and stressed that self-reliance in food production could enhance national health and food security.

He passionately urged the government to take action by providing farmers with the necessary resources, tools, and incentives to harness Ghana’s rich agricultural potential.

According to him, agriculture can be a driving force for economic growth and a step towards sustainability.

In addition to his call for agricultural reform, Obrempon Sintim Poku III addressed another pressing issue: the alarming rise in substance abuse among Ghanaian youth.

He urged parents to guide their children away from harmful drugs such as “red,” marijuana (locally known as “wee”), and other substances that could derail their lives. He encouraged young people to focus on their education and embrace healthy lifestyles to secure brighter futures.

The Atweaman Adwira Festival provided a platform to not only celebrate cultural heritage but also discuss key challenges facing the community and the nation as a whole. Through his address, Obrempon Sintim Poku III underscored the interconnectedness of agriculture, education, and public health in shaping a prosperous and resilient Ghana.
