The Electoral Commission has removed 17 political parties from Ghana’s list. The EC inspected all registered political parties in Ghana during May and June 2022.
After the exercise, the EC used Section 15 (3) (c) of Act 574 to terminate the registration of political parties without national and regional offices.
The registration certificates of the political parties have been revoked in compliance with Section 15 (3) (c) of the Political Parties Law, 2000 (Act 574) effective November 1, 2022.
Some impacted parties contested the revocation.
Akwasi Addai Odike, head of the United Progressive Party, has before accused the Electoral Commission of disregarding minor parties.
“[Electoral Commission Chair] doesn’t respect me. Mr. Odike complained on Eyewitness News that the wife never lets him meet her.
“They were given all the information, so I don’t understand why she says they can’t locate our offices.”
“NDC and NPP often don’t submit even audited reports, and it takes the EC months to get them to do so. Odike said this is usual for political parties.
Professor Ransford Gyampo of the University of Ghana called on all stakeholders to help the Electoral Commission in its regulatory responsibility.
“Democracy is costly, therefore if you have political parties worth their salt and they meet all the qualifications, then they should all be on the ballot if we have the means.”
