Policies of the West to blame for the rising cost of food in Ghana; not us – Russian Embassy

A statement from the Russian Embassy in Ghana has encouraged the media to cease blaming Russia for the rising cost of food in Ghana.

Media outlets in Western countries have bought into the Western narrative that they are to blame for the continent’s food crisis, according to the embassy’s claims.

The embassy accused the media on Thursday, June 30, in a series of tweets, of purposely disregarding the reality that Western policies have caused economic issues on the continent since 2020.

A similar denial by the Russian government was made earlier this year. According to the Russian Embassy’s tweets from April of this year, the issues that have brought the global food value chain to its knees are not attributable to the Russians.

From the middle of 2020, food costs rose steadily until they hit an all-time high in February 2022. During the post-COVID recovery phase, demand for food, raw materials, and transportation services, particularly freight, is increasing, resulting in a market shock, the Embassy tweeted in April 2022.

But Economists say Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could spark a global food crisis, something most African countries are already experiencing. Ghana is complaining the development (Russia-Ukraine war) is directly affecting its economy and agricultural value chain.

The war between Russia and Ukraine started in February 2022. So far, about 10,000 people have lost their lives following the Russia-Ukraine war.

America and EU countries have imposed several sanctions on Russia.
