Wendy Shay, the acclaimed singer and songwriter known by her stage name, has expressed deep frustration regarding the unjust treatment and objectification that women face within the music industry.
Appearing on TV3’s Day Show hosted by Berla Mundi, the diva passionately discussed the prevalent practice of categorizing female musicians as ‘female artistes,’ while their male counterparts are simply referred to as ‘artistes.’
With unwavering passion, Wendy Shay vigorously advocated for equal treatment and recognition.
She firmly emphasized that women in the music industry invest just as much effort, if not more, than their male peers. Therefore, they deserve to be acknowledged as ‘artistes’ without any gender-based differentiations.
Her resolute stance highlights the urgent issue of gender inequality in the music realm, underlining the necessity for an equitable and inclusive environment.
Wendy Shay’s advocacy stands as an empowering beacon for all women aiming to shatter barriers and challenge societal norms. Her efforts contribute to fostering an atmosphere where talent and hard work are acknowledged impartially, without prejudice or bias.
“It’s not equitable. Above all, I dislike the term ‘female artistes’ because our male counterparts aren’t labeled ‘male artistes.’ They’re just artists, and so should we be. We are artists,” she firmly expressed.
Wendy Shay pointed out the dedication and hard work put in by female musicians like herself and Sister Efya. She underscored their significant efforts, emphasizing that they merit recognition and appreciation.
