Protestors on day one of the Citizens Against Galamsey protest prevented the DJ from playing songs by Ghanaian dancehall musician, Shatta Wale.

The 3-day protest begun on Thursday, October 2 and expected to end on Saturday, October 5.

The demonstrators objected to Shatta Wale’s song because the artiste had tweeted on X days prior to the protest, making some comments which the protesters felt was against their cause.

The demonstration, which drew hundreds of participants advocating for environmental protection and sustainable mining practices in the country, took place in Accra.

As the DJ began playing a selection of popular tracks by Shatta Wale, demonstrators quickly voiced their discontent, chanting slogans “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey,” against the musician whose songs were being played.

Many felt that certain comments by the artiste against illegal mining undermined the protest’s message and goals.

The protest under the slogan “FreeTheCitizens” and “SayNoToGalamsey” was organised by concerned citizens and aimed to raise awareness about the severe impacts of illegal mining on local ecosystems, water sources, and communities.

Participants carried banners, delivered speeches, and shared personal stories highlighting the urgent need for action against Galamsey activities.

The DJ, initially taken aback by the backlash, stopped the music and attempted to address the crowd. However, the demonstrators remained resolute, insisting that the event must align with their principles.

The protest reflects a growing movement across the nation, as citizens increasingly demand responsible protection of natural resources and accountability from those who profit at the expense of the environment.
